Modern Mediterranean Residential Landscape Design

Alexandra Headlands, Sunshine Coast

A once tile-covered backyard has been reimagined into a timeless Mediterranean-inspired retreat at Alexandra Headland. Guided by a contemporary Mediterranean brief, the design maximises every square metre of the site—transforming a rigid, underutilised space into a layered and immersive outdoor environment.

The landscape palette weaves together a rich tapestry of textures and forms. Sculptural agave contrasts with soft drifts of native rosemary and Casuarina glauca ‘Cousin It’, while cascading rosemary, bougainvillea, and ornamental grasses introduce movement and seasonal variation. Olive trees and cacti provide strong structural anchors, complemented by flowering climbers that soften the timber pergola and rendered walls.

The layout is carefully composed to encourage movement and connection, with framed vistas, shaded seating zones, and a considered balance of planting and hardscape. The result is a cohesive outdoor setting that elevates everyday living while evoking the relaxed elegance of the Mediterranean.

Residential Landscape Design

California, USA

This residential landscape project is located in Santa Monica and exemplifies relaxed, coastal outdoor living with a focus on social connection and layered planting.

The design integrates a central swimming pool surrounded by lush softscape and multiple zones for gathering, dining, and quiet retreat.

Plant selection includes sculptural agave, cascading rosemary, bouganvilea, and dense ornamental grasses, creating a rich tapestry of textures and seasonal interest. Olive trees and cacti add Mediterranean structure, while flowering climbers soften architectural elements like the timber pergola and rendered walls.

The layout encourages movement and interaction, with framed views, shaded seating, and a balance of soft and hard elements. This garden demonstrates how thoughtful planting and materiality can elevate everyday outdoor living.

Residential Landscape Design

Turkey

This residential garden vignette forms part of a broader outdoor living design, responding to the warm coastal climate and the desire for layered, textural planting.

The composition is anchored by a travertine-paved pathway and low retaining walls, which define intimate zones for planting and movement.

The planting palette draws from Mediterranean and native influences, featuring rosemary, sculptural agave, thyme and palms.

These elements are arranged to create depth and variation while maintaining a cohesive visual rhythm.

Subtle changes in level and material—travertine, gravel, and pebble—add tactile interest and help delineate functional zones. Uplighting is used sparingly to highlight key plant forms and textures, supporting a calm, immersive experience that transitions seamlessly from day to dusk.

Residential Architecture and Landscape Design

Tweed Valley, Australia

This residential hillside project is located on a sloping site, where both the landscape and architecture respond to the topography through a multi-terraced design. Each terrace has a distinct use and character, creating a layered and dynamic outdoor experience. One level features a greenhouse for planting and horticultural activities, while another preserves the natural slope with rocks serving as informal seating. A terrace with a fireplace provides a sunny winter retreat, and the pool terrace includes a pergola that frames the dining area, provides shade, and enhances views of the surrounding landscape. The terrace-style landscape design aligns with the multi-level terraces of the house, creating seamless connections between the building and garden through intermediate terraces and roof gardens. Together, the architecture and landscape offer a cohesive spatial flow and multiple outlooks to nature, enhancing the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces.
